Egham Town 1 Redhill 2 - Tuesday, 8th February 2022

The Reds continued their defence of the Premier Challenge Cup with a battling 2-1 win away to Egham Town in Tuesday night's Third Round tie at Runnymede Stadium.

Both teams started very positively, with plenty of robust tackling in midfield, on a pitch that was a little spongy in parts. The visitors held the upper hand but needed a goal to settle them down. It came after 11 minutes, skipper Joe Dyett's powerful downward header from a Brendan Murphy-McVey corner flashing past 'keeper Finn Rushton and two defenders on the line.

Four minutes later Alpha Diallo, our recent signing from Dulwich Hamlet, was put through on the left by Murphy-McVey but his firm shot across Rushton just missed the far post. But the Lobsters doubled their lead on the half-hour and it was a gift. Rushton had trouble controlling a back-pass near the edge of the box and the alert Jack Knight nipped in to take the ball off the 'keeper and knock it into an empty net.

Redhill couldn't quite hold onto that 2-0 advantage until half-time, Egham left-back Luke Brophy's shot from out on the left wing taking a little deflection as it flew past Jack Minchin. The Reds came close with Knight's volley and a deflected Jamarie Brissett effort but Egham did most of the attacking in that second half. They were ultimately denied an equaliser by a resolute Lobsters side clearly determined to keep their hands on the trophy they won so memorably last May.
