Redhill progress in the FA Cup with an Away win at East Grinstead

East Grinstead Town 1 Redhill 3 - Saturday, 17th August 2024

Jordan Clark's Redhill equalled last year's feat of starting the season with five wins as they claimed a memorable 3-1 victory at the Vistavis Community Stadium on Saturday to knock Isthmian League side East Grinstead Town out of the Emirates FA Cup.

The first half was nothing if not eventful. There had been little to choose between the teams in the first 12 minutes before one of the assistant referees turned an ankle and was replaced by a qualified referee who happened to be in the crowd. Play resumed after a break of eleven minutes and Redhill were quickly gifted a goal. Wasps 'keeper Matte Pierson, out on their left wing, kicked a clearance straight to Tom Harland-Goddard and the Lobsters striker aimed a perfect shot into an empty net from all of 35 yards.

The home side were always dangerous from corners and free-kicks and an overworked Redhill defence had to block shots coming in from all angles. In the first few minutes of the second half Jaevon Dyer hit a right-footer across the 'keeper that clipped the far post and East Grinstead's Ollie Spinks slipped a low effort into the corner for an equaliser with Luke Roberts apparently unsighted.

Harland-Goddard had a "goal" chalked off for offside and an Ethan Ford blast clearly struck a defender's hand in the box - the crowd could both see it and hear it - before the pressure finally told on 67 minutes as the lethal Dyer fired left-footed past Pierson at the end of a weaving run. Nine minutes later substitute Luke Bejashvili burst into the box and the ball broke to Harland-Goddard who again scored into an empty net as an exceptional away performance ended in a brilliant 3-1 win for the Lobsters,
