Surrey Senior Cup Quarter Final: Redhill go out on penalties

Focus returns to league title challenge after battling performance against higher opposition

Redhill 0 Leatherhead 0 (Leatherhead won 5-3 on penalties) - Tuesday, 11th March 2025

There was shootout heartbreak for the Lobsters on Tuesday night after a magnificent battling display had earned them a 0-0 draw in their Surrey Senior Cup quarter-final against Isthmian League side Leatherhead at Kiln Brow.

Redhill had the better of the first half with right-winger Jaevon Dyer unfortunate not to score a hat-trick, particularly when his shot beat 'keeper Sonny Wheeler but was somehow scooped off the line by covering defender George Hedley. At the other end Luke Roberts hadn't been put under too much pressure until the 35th minute, when players from both sides lunged in as Redhill's talented 'keeper struggled to hold onto a high ball in from the left.

As the injured Roberts received treatment, referee Harry Yellen spoke to several players and showed a red card to Leatherhead midfielder Tyrell Butler. Redhill tightened their grip on the game in the second half but a goal continued to elude them. In the last few minutes efforts from Archie Harland-Goddard, Nathan Hogan and Ethan Ford agonisingly missed the target by inches. There was no extra time, so penalties would decide which team advanced to the semi-finals.

The visitors won the shootout 5-3 with Matthew Everett, Kenny Beaney, Kane Fitzgerald, Niran Butler and former Redhill player Kareem Akinnidi all successful with their kicks. Hogan, Tommy Smith and Arlie Talboys converted theirs for the Lobsters but the unlucky Ford saw his firm shot for the corner brilliantly saved by Wheeler. It was a quarter-final that Redhill deserved to win but their focus could now turn back to the league.
