A look back down memory lane.

Did you know that Redhill once played Chelsea? The score was Redhill 4 Chelsea 2!

Yes, to be fair that friendly match at the Sports Ground was a while ago. It was actually in 1948, a year in which Chelsea finished in 18th place in the old First Division under manager Billy Birrell. (Arsenal were champions.) I've seen a summary of the match that hints that Chelsea used some first-team players. What we know for sure is that the Blues' line-up included Len Goulden, an inside-forward who was capped 14 times for England, scoring four goals and playing alongside the likes of Stanley Matthews and Tommy Lawton.

Redhill were a decent Athenian League side then with gates in the thousands and we had a good run in the FA Cup, winning four ties - one of them 9-0 against Guildford - before going out 2-1 at Horsham in the final qualifying round and missing out on a First Round match at Notts County. A year later we met a strong Arsenal team as part of the deal that took talented youngsters Colin Grimshaw and Bernard Sexton from the Reds to the Gunners. Again it was played at the Memorial Sports Ground and Redhill only lost 1-0.

Later there was a friendly with Spurs, the famous FA Cup tie at Norwich City and into the '60s a match against Fulham to mark Redhill's first home fixture under lights, the Whites edging the contest 4-3 with Crystal Palace legend Johnny Byrne notching the winner. I saw a Palace XI, essentially the reserve team, play at the Sports Ground in around 1970 and the Reds won 2-1 with our fleet-footed striker Alan Ives the star. Much later, in 1991, a crowd of 1,200 at Kiln Brow saw Ian Wright and manager Steve Coppell turn out for the Eagles against Redhill in a charity match.
