Determined Lobsters hold Bulls to a draw

Redhill 0 Jersey Bulls 0 - Saturday, 30th March 2024

One of Redhill's grittiest performances of the season earned them a deserved 0-0 draw against top-three side Jersey Bulls in the spring sunshine at Kiln Brow.

There were encouraging signs for the Lobsters who would now go into their last six matches of the Premier South campaign just two points from the play-off places. They were a crossbar's width away from scoring a winner as Nathan Hogan's swerving free-kick flew past Bulls 'keeper Pierce Roche to thud against the woodwork and they had to play with ten men for the last 18 minutes after midfielder Jack Saunders had been shown a second yellow card, both of them for fairly unremarkable fouls.

After a cagey opening to the match Bulls winger Jonny LeQuesne hit the top of Luke Roberts' left-hand post from a cross that looked to be drifting wide on 18 minutes. As the Lobsters got into their stride Hogan's sprint down the left away from three defenders ended with a shot that Roche grabbed at the near post and a Tyrese Sutherland left-footer along the ground missed the goal by a yard.

Then came Hogan's classy free-kick in added time at the end of the half that seemed to inspire the home side to push to create more chances in the second period. Sutherland on the right flank was proving to be a real handful for the Bulls defence, which usually needed up to three players to check his surging runs. A flat-out Roche just got a hand to one shot from Redhill's top scorer that was heading for the bottom corner.

In an exhausting last few minutes Redhill fought manfully to keep their goal intact, none more so than substitute Ethan Ford who was making important clearances when barely able to walk after one shuddering challenge. Roberts also helped the Lobsters' cause with a brilliant tip-over from a Luke Campbell header.
