Win proves elusive as points are shared

Redhill 1 Epsom & Ewell 1 - Saturday, 9th March 2024

A season's best home crowd for a league fixture of 280 saw Redhill drop two points in a 1-1 draw against Epsom & Ewell on Saturday but stay in the top four in the Premier South table.

Buoyed by a thumping win in their last match, Epsom started confidently at the Brow and did most of the early attacking. But there was little in the way of clear-cut chances for either side in the first half. For the hosts Adam Grant couldn't quite jump high enough to properly direct a peach of a left-wing cross from Tyrese Sutherland, his header drifting wide, and a Gavin Quintyne half-volley from outside the box narrowly missed the target.

The Lobsters were much more of a threat in the second half and forced a number of corners. From one of those, expertly curled in from the left by Peter Wedgeworth on 56 minutes, centre-back Tommy Smith smacked the ball home right-footed at the far post for his fifth goal of the campaign. Four minutes later Quintyne looked certain to make it 2-0 from close in but his effort flew over the bar.

Twenty minutes from time Salts 'keeper Fabian Witter was at full stretch to push away a Sutherland thunderbolt and almost immediately a header from skipper Eoin Fraser was inches away from the top-right corner. But a second Redhill goal proved elusive and the visitors levelled with just five minutes of normal time left. Adam Green's free-kick found its way to Zack Wright in front of goal and the substitute nodded the ball past home 'keeper Isaac Ogunseri.
