Lobsters lose on the road

Sheerwater 2 Redhill 0 - Saturday, 16th March 2024

Redhill had been boosted by the signing of Nathan Hogan, a former Lobster, and the experienced Robb Sheridan before Saturday's away fixture at Sheerwater. But they found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline against a team who were second from bottom in the Premier South table.

It was an entertaining first half at the Eastwood Leisure Centre in which both teams could actually have netted several times. The Sheers were ahead in eight minutes, George Mackie following up to slide the ball into an empty net after Luke Roberts, back after his shoulder injury, had made an excellent save from Elliot York's shot down to his left.

Sheers 'keeper Alfie Mickley palmed away Ethan Ford's curling effort before both sides hit a post inside a minute - Reuben Duncan for Redhill and George Sellick for Sheerwater. Hogan and Arlie Desanges missed chances from close in, then a firm shot by Duncan went a foot wide and it was still 1-0 to the hosts at the break.

Hogan, signed from Egham Town, was still lively into the second half and fired in a couple of deflected shots that Mickley was in a position to grab. A Tyrese Sutherland 30-yarder just cleared the bar and substitute Ben Dyson's cross-shot was finger-tipped behind as Redhill looked more and more likely to level the scores. Then five minutes from the end of normal time Mackie's persistence on the right won him the ball and alert substitute George Onwusonye was at the far post to turn home his low cross for 2-0.

The Lobsters held onto that fourth spot in the table but now face a challenging trip to play runaway leaders Farnham Town at Mead Lane on Tuesday night.
