Redhill are in Surrey Senior Cup action tomorrow with an intriguing tie in the Preliminary Round (Tuesday, 7.45). We go to Fetcham Grove to play Leatherhead, currently mid-table in the Isthmian League's Premier Division and therefore two levels above us.
When the Reds last reached a Surrey Senior Cup Final in 1969, our opponents were Leatherhead. The Tanners lifted the trophy after beating us 3-1 at Sutton United's ground with an attendance recorded as 1,151.
One of the greatest triumphs in Redhill's history took place at Fetcham Grove a year later. We won the Athenian League Cup Final there after edging Walton & Hersham 2-1 after extra time. Our goals were scored by Eddie Webb and Alan Ives and our manager in those days was the wily Jock Hamilton.
How good were Walton & Hersham? Three years later they won the Amateur Cup before more than 40,000 fans at Wembley. How good was Alan Ives? He later left Redhill for Tooting and was capped for England at amateur level.
Redhill have twice won the Surrey Senior Cup. In 1929 we beat Epsom Town 3-2 in the Final at Guildford, watched by a crowd of nearly 5,000, and in 1966 we defeated crack Isthmians Sutton United 4-3 after extra time in an epic match at Tooting's old ground at Sandy Lane.
It is a competition known for its surprising results and a Redhill win tomorrow would go down a treat before we go into lockdown again.
