We look ahead to tomorrow's Surrey Senior Cup tie with fellow CCL - Premier division side Guildford.

Article - David Barber (club historian)

Six weeks ago, just before we went into lockdown again, Redhill achieved one of their best results in recent years by knocking Isthmian Premier side Leatherhead out of this season's Surrey Senior Cup. We won 3-2 in the Preliminary Round at the Tanners' Fetcham Grove ground and it was Matt MacKenzie, Arlie Tallboys and Mo Diakite who notched the goals on a memorable night.

Tomorrow night (Tuesday, 7.45) the Lobsters are in Surrey Senior Cup action again with a First Round tie against Guildford City under the lights at Kiln Brow. City play in the same division as Redhill and are currently nine points and five places below us in the table. Last season we beat them home and away - 3-1 and 4-1.

The Surrey Senior Cup is one of English football's oldest competitions, our old rivals Reigate Priory winning the first Final 2-1 against East Sheen way back in 1883. Redhill entered for the first time in 1896-97, only our third season as a club, and went out to West Norwood at the first stage. But since then we have reached six Finals and won two of them.

Redhill enjoyed great success on the field in the 1920s and lifted the Senior Cup in '29 after edging Epsom Town 3-2 in a Final played before a crowd of 4,600 at Joseph's Road in Guildford. Then we had to wait 37 years before we won it again, more than a thousand Redhill fans travelling to Tooting's old stadium to see us shock top Isthmian outfit Sutton United with our 4-3 victory in the 1966 Final. Centre-forward Micky Harrington scored the winner in extra time.

We reached the last of our six Finals three years later, losing to Leatherhead at Sutton. Now Harrison Williams' team have an opportunity to write their own history, starting at the Brow tomorrow night.
