A look back down memory lane during our 125th year.

Redhill have played 34 competitive first-team matches so far this season and not a single one has been drawn. But we know that the Reds' first-ever match, played 125 years ago, ended all square at 2-2!

A major factor in the development of the town had been the coming of the railways, with Redhill being where the main line from London to Dover and the one to Brighton parted company. The convenience of Redhill's access, its reputed healthiness and the charm of its scenery drew to it numerous merchants and businessmen who preferred to live away from the capital. Many a public figure was interested in getting involved with a football club that might be successful and boost the name of the town.

Redhill FC was formed at a meeting at the Warwick Hotel on 5 November 1894 and obviously the new team needed somewhere to play. Henry Trower was the Reds' first goalkeeper and he and his family kindly allowed them to use one of the fields on their estate at Wiggie, then farmland to the north-east of the town, as their home pitch. Wiggie doesn't exist now but "Wiggie Lane" does. It lies to the west of the railway line, whereas Wiggie on the old maps was clearly to the east, so Redhill's first ground would roughly have been where Redhill Bowling Club is today.

Redhill's first match was swiftly arranged. On the Saturday afternoon of 24 November we drew 2-2 with Dorking before what was considered to be a very good crowd of around 200. The heroic Mr Trower, then 45 years old, played in goal. He had previously turned out for Reigate Priory, five-time winners of the Surrey County Cup. He was also an enthusiastic cricketer, tennis player, golfer, cyclist and skater and was fit enough to win a hurdles race in his 60th year.
