Lobsters Brave Cup Run Comes To An End

Redhill's brilliant FA Cup run was ended in South Gloucestershire yesterday after a brave display by Harrison Williams men.

Report - David Barber

Redhill's great FA Cup adventure ended in Gloucestershire yesterday. Playing in their seventh match in this season's competition, the Reds were on the cusp of reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round for the first time in nearly half a century. But Yate Town of the Southern League Premier South, two levels above Redhill, proved to be a challenge too far and deserved their 3-0 victory in the rain at Lodge Road.

The Yate Town "Bluebells" passed the ball around quickly from the start, attacking dangerously down both flanks to fire in crosses that kept the Reds defence at full stretch. However, 28 minutes in, it was the visitors who came closest to grabbing the lead. Yate 'keeper Hannah blocked a fierce effort from Nathan Hogan, sprinting in from the left, and Noe Vendrells' follow-up header smacked against the face of the crossbar.

The Lobsters had to endure a difficult few minutes before half-time with centre-back Arlie Talboys struggling with some kind of muscle injury. A goal looked almost inevitable and it came via a simple far-post header from Sims-Burgess. Talboys was substituted at the break and Redhill were up against it now. But Sam King's hard cross only needed a touch, a Hogan free-kick was inches over and the Reds were still very much in contention with 15 minutes to go.

Then two goals in three minutes from Hall and Tumelty, the second direct from a free-kick, ended Redhill's Cup hopes. But they "gave it a go" as boss Harrison Williams had promised.
