First-half onslaught sees off Abbey

First-half onslaught sees off Abbey

Lobsters seventh league win on the road

Abbey Rangers 0 Redhill 3 - Saturday, 9th November 2024

Nearest challengers AFC Whyteleafe and Jersey Bulls were both involved in the FA Vase on Saturday, so Redhill had an opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the Premier South table to six points. It was an opportunity that Jordan Clark's side grabbed with both hands, winning 3-0 away to mid-table Abbey Rangers despite having to play for nearly half-an-hour with ten men after skipper Eoin Fraser had received a red card.

Abbey Rangers from Addlestone barely crossed the halfway line in the first few minutes as Redhill tore into them. Nathan Hogan volleyed just over the bar after a lapse in the home defence before the Lobsters took a fourth-minute lead as defender Tommy Smith smacked a right-footer into the far corner after clever work by Ethan Ford.

There were destined to be more goals in that blistering first half. On the half-hour Hogan slipped the ball across to Alex Keating whose slight delay in shooting completely fooled 'keeper Shay Honey and allowed the in-form striker to tap the ball into virtually an empty net. Five minutes before the break the lethal Hogan-Keating combination made it 3-0, the latter just getting his boot to Hogan's hard cross in front of a defender to register his ninth goal of the season.

Redhill were rarely in danger of conceding in the second half with Luke Roberts at his commanding best and the defence resilient in front of him. Instead it was a half that was notable for some surprising refereeing decisions. Charlie Penny was denied a debut goal by an offside call that came after Hogan had passed the ball back to him and Fraser was dismissed for a foul that was arguably no worse than many others committed by both sides that afternoon.
