Redhill 1 Herne Bay 0 - Saturday, 2nd September 2023
Reuben Duncan, the former Millwall player who has been a mainstay in midfield for Jordan Clark's Redhill this season, found himself in an unusually advanced position in the tenth minute of Saturday's FA Cup tie against Herne Bay at Kiln Brow. His low left-footer across Bay 'keeper Josh Bexon and into the far corner turned out to be enough to take the Lobsters into the Second Round Qualifying.
Redhill have successfully negotiated three rounds of the world-famous competition and all eyes will now be on the draw on Monday.
Herne Bay, with many of their fans making the long trip from the Kent coast on Saturday, play in the Isthmian League's South East Division - a level above Redhill - and the Lobsters experienced an uncomfortable few minutes before Duncan's opportunist strike gave them something to hold onto.
Bay soon had a chance to equalise. Luke Wynne-Roberts' push on an opponent close to a post was quite a subtle one but it was one that Ukrainian referee Vlad Bakulin, who last month officiated at the Game4Ukraine charity match at Stamford Bridge, was perfectly placed to see. He awarded a penalty but the Lobsters' 'keeper quickly made amends for his indiscretion by moving smartly to his right to palm away Gil Carvalho's spot-kick.
Bay buzzed around Redhill's goal in a second half that must have been exhausting both sides. The visitors looked to have levelled on the hour but referee Bakulin ruled that Wynne-Roberts had been impeded as he stretched for a high ball into a crowded goalmouth.
