Redhill 1 Banstead Athletic 2 - Monday, 18th April 2022

After some wonderful highlights - winning through four rounds of the FA Cup and sitting top of the Premier South table two days after Christmas - Redhill have now lost three games in a row as the season draws to a disappointing close. It is the first time this has happened in the current campaign, one that has brought a whopping 27 victories, with the latest setback coming against local rivals Banstead Athletic who edged us 2-1 at the Brow on Easter Monday.

The Lobsters would probably have been expected to beat a team who will finish in the bottom two and it looked promising for us in the opening minutes as Banstead 'keeper Liam Holden punched away Jamarie Brissett's hard right-footer and Joe Dyett "scored" with a looping header that referee Valko mysteriously disallowed.

But Redhill had the shock of going behind on 39 minutes, Jamie Obama sliding the ball home from the left side of the box after the Reds' defence had moved across to deal with some clear and present danger on the right. It got worse four minutes into the second half as Jack Minchin saved well from Brandon McCarthy but was helpless as the alert Obama followed up to make it 2-0 to Banstead.

Lucas Atkins gave the Lobsters hope with a goal on 75 minutes, his low shot through a crowded box creeping just inside the right-hand post with Holden for once flat-footed. The home side piled forward as they sniffed an equaliser and substitute Jason Kaate was desperately unlucky with two efforts inside about three seconds which Banstead somehow managed to keep out. Redhill will finish sixth and young defenders like Blake Mitchell and D'Quarme Copeland look to be good prospects for the future.

Redhill: Minchin, Mitchell, Stone, Jarrett, Copeland, Dyett, Brissett, Monga (Kaate), Hayford, Atkins, Watson (Peacock)
