Tooting & Mitcham United 0 Redhill 2 - Tuesday, 6th August 2024
Redhill made an encouraging start to their Premier South campaign with a 2-0 win against Tooting & Mitcham, still a big name in non-League football, at Imperial Fields on Tuesday night. This time we didn't get the seven-goal extravaganza that we had in the first half at Fisher with scoring chances few and far between. Luke Roberts got down well to push Bassey Ekpenyong's low shot behind, Terrors 'keeper Toby McKimm grabbed Ethan Ford's free-kick under the bar and it was goalless at the break.
A busier Redhill put some better moves together in the second half and got the breakthrough on the hour. Tooting's Ashley Sheppard, later proclaimed their "Man of the Match", was sin-binned apparently for disputing the award of a throw-in to the Lobsters and the visitors were quick to take advantage. Ford's corner from the right caused pandemonium in the Tooting defence, two efforts being blocked on the line before full-back Joe Dyett forced the ball in.
A Terrors side that included several former Redhill players threw everything forward to try and conjure up an equaliser. But six minutes from time they were short at the back as Jaevon Dyer showed great composure to hold off a defender before deftly slipping the ball past the advancing McKimm for 2-0. Roberts was faultless between the posts for the Lobsters and a brilliant one-handed save from Habeeb Adepoju's bullet header at the end ensured victory.
Redhill welcome Corinthian-Casuals, another club with a great history, to the Brow on Saturday followed by Guildford City on Tuesday evening.
