Clinical finishing and resolution defending sees off the Brewers

Redhill 3 Alton 0 - Saturday, 6th April 2024

Redhill got back to winning ways after a few lean weeks, beating Alton 3-0 at a windy Kiln Brow to improve their prospects of making the play-offs. With five games to play, two at home and three away, the Lobsters are currently eighth in the Premier South table but are only two points behind the team in fourth place.

Goals had been a problem before Saturday, with just two scored in six games, but Redhill were quickly into their stride to take the lead against the play-off chasing Hampshire side with only eight minutes on the clock. An Alton defender failed to control the ball properly in the windy conditions and an alert Alex Keating pinched it from him before firing in a crisp right-footer that sped past 'keeper Toby Fisher and into the bottom left corner.

With the wind behind them in that first half the Brewers put the Lobsters under a lot of pressure with a series of menacing corners, free-kicks and long throws. But Luke Roberts was on top form to keep Redhill's goal intact and from a breakaway attack on 32 minutes the home side made it 2-0. Nathan Hogan was one-on-one with Fisher after Keating had slipped the ball through to him and the confident youngster ran on to shoot between the 'keeper's legs.

Three minutes into the second half the Lobsters increased their lead. Keating was clear through the middle after receiving Hogan's astute pass and having swiftly glanced in the assistant referee's direction to make sure he wasn't offside, he side-footed the ball past the advancing Fisher for a clinching third goal. Redhill midfielder Olly Allen was red-carded after a mistimed tackle near the end but this was a great result and a great performance by the Lobsters.
