Away fans delight in derby win

Horley Town 0 Redhill 2 - Tuesday, 9th April 2024

Two wins in four days have taken Jordan Clark's Redhill back into the play-off places in the Premier South. They followed up their hugely encouraging 3-0 victory over fellow play-off chasers Alton at Kiln Brow on Saturday with a 2-0 win away to Horley Town on Tuesday night.

A typically feisty contest between the two local rivals at the New Defence had some controversial moments as Horley finished with nine players after losing two to red cards. On 36 minutes, with the game still goalless, centre-back Tommy Smith for the Lobsters and Clarets right-winger Lewis Pearch got in a tangle as they both tried to get back to their feet after a challenge that had earned the former a free-kick. Referee Harry Yellen consulted with his assistant before dismissing the unlucky Pearch.

The second sending-off came soon after substitute Ethan Ford had made it 2-0 to the visitors on 74 minutes. The scorer was clear through the middle before Matt Rapson moved across to block his progress and being the last man just outside the box he was swiftly on his way to the dressing room.

Redhill had made a whirlwind start to the game, buoyed by Saturday's result that had ended a run of six without a win, and veteran 'keeper George Hyde had to be at his best to save from a Nathan Hogan header and a low Tyrese Sutherland left-footer in the first few minutes. But they didn't get their noses in front until the last moments of the first half. Hogan was tripped from behind in a crowded penalty area, Hyde pushed away Reuben Duncan's firm spot-kick but Alex Keating put the loose ball in the net.

The Lobsters have just four games to play, two at home and two away, and there now seems to be a steely determination to get the job done.
